Final Storyboard

Final Storyboard

We all agreed that our favourite storyboard idea was the first one we produced, some amendments have been made to improve it, and a shot list has also been added to each clip.

Digipak Planning (part 2) - The Hoosiers Digipak review (part 2)

This is one of the cleverest album covers and digipaks I have ever seen. The band came up with a simply genius way to appeal to their audience. Change the colour. There were four different album covers. Each had exactly the same graphics and information but the colours were different. There was a choice of red, yellow, green or blue. My favourite colour being green I bought the green one. However now my favourite colour is red so a bad choice in the long run.
The inside of the digipak is what you would expect to find inside your typical CD. I guess to some people it may be considered as being a little more 'main stream'. The insert has a little legal section towards the back and the rest of the digipak is just the lyrics to the songs. In fitting with the style and main theme of the CD the images are all cartoon graphics. The graphics relate to the songs and the lyrics/story that they tell.
The cartoons themselves are very meaning full. Each one is a grey, round faced person. This is so that they do not distinguish any social or ethnic group from others and it means that they are not being discriminative.
The Images relate to the Lyrics like rule 3 of goodwin's theory states.

Magazine Advertisement Planning

Magazine advertisements for albums and music videos tend to be similar. They either include an image of the artists or the image used as the album cover:

album cover: Jay Z - The Blueprint 3

music artist: Jessie J - Who You Are

Magazine Advertisements almost always advertise the main (most popular) song on the album:

If the artist has released multiple albums, certain factors e.g. colours, fonts, tend to run through their advertisements. For example, Jessie J's advertisements all use the same logo, reusing the font and colour scheme which she has used in the past.

Digipak Planning

There are numerous types of Digipak, each with different numbers of panels and places to store the disc (disc slot). I've chosen to create a 6 panel digipak as anymore would leave too much space that isn't required and any less panels would leave too little space for the graphics and images I want to include.

4 panel:
The four panel digipak has two panels on each side, on inside panel will include the disc slot.

6 panel:
The six panel digipak has three panels on each side. This is one of the most popular digipaks used, I will be creating a 6 panel digipak.

8 Panel:
The eight panel digipak has four panels on each side. This is better suited to albums with more than one disc included.

10 Panel:
The ten panel digipak has five panels on each side and can be arranged in a horizontal formation with a central disc.

Deciding on a Genre and Song

Deciding on a Genre and Song

We also discussed Mad World by Gary Jules, as it didn't have a very complex music video and it would have been extremely easy to create something new and original, but eventually we concluded that it was too slow and depressing.

We looked at various different genres, such as Folk, and were thinking about doing Let her go by Passenger. However, one of the main conventions of the Folk genre is instruments the music video. Since none of us can play an instrument we decided it would be very difficult to sync the audio with the video.

Passenger - Let Her Go - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBumgq5yVrA

In the end we chose Pop as our genre as musical instruments aren't required, our only concern is lip syncing.

Next we needed to pick a song: After agreeing on the genre, we quickly decided on a song. Cops and Robbers by the Hoosiers. This is because it has male vocalists (we are all male) so we can easily lip sync, doesn't require instruments as it belongs to the Pop genre, and has a narrative which we can explore in our music video.

Mood Board

We created a mood board for our production. A mood board is a series of images related to the genre and the type of music video we want to create.

The mood board contains costumes of cops and robbers from different time periods from the 1800s to the modern day. This is because we want to show the evolution of criminals through the ages. Furthermore we have included a number of possible locations that we have looked at as well as props that will make our scenes look more relatable to the time period.

Targeting Your Target Audience

Is Netflix taking over?
BARB Report 2016:

Subscription Viewing on Demand
POSITIVE Implications:
  • More platforms to show your video on
  • Ability to target niche audiences
  • Ability for publisher to shop around to get a good deal in exchange for a SVOD to show your video
  • Video On Demand - No time restriction - people can watch whenever they want
NEGATIVE Implications:
  • Viewers can choose not to pay if they feel it costs too much - risk of piracy
  • So many platforms mean you could get paid less for your video
  • More platforms means more competition
  • Viewers expect more
  • Piracy - smaller artists not making any money - can't make a career out of it
  • Many people don't pay for music anymore - usually just watched on YouTube or illegally downloaded.
Example music video budgets:
Michael Jackson "Beat It" - $150,000 (1983)

What genre should we choose?

I've completed the research section of my blog, I am now beginning the planning for my music video.
We are deciding on a genre for our music video. However, there is a huge variety to choose from, e.g. Pop, hip-pop, country, rock, electronic, RnB etc.

After analysing many different songs and videos from an enormous variety of artists we came to the decision that Pop, being the most popular, relevant for our age, ethnicity, and the fact it is the genre most of us in the group are most familiar with- it would be the best candidate for our group.

Detailed Planning Schedule

Week 1- 14th of November-  decide on a Genre and Song
Week 2- 21st of November-  Multiple Narratives and Final Storyboard completed
Week 3- 28th of November- Moodboard and Planning for Location, Props and Costume
Week 4- 5th of December- Prepare and shoot first two days of filming
Week 5- 12th of December- The next two days of filming
Week 6- 19th of December- Complete all reshoots during the Christmas holiday
Week 7- 26th of December- Christmas Break
Week 8- 2nd of January- (Re-check)
Week 9- 9th of January- (Reshoot and film green screen day)
Week 10- 16th of January- Post production

Permission (Attempt 2)

After receiving an email from the manager of The Hoosiers telling us that we needed to contact RCA Records, we could not find an active email for RCA so we have had to contact them via Twitter:

Permission

We went to the Hoosiers' website and found the email address of their manager. We sent an email asking for permission, and quickly got this reply.

As the band does not actually own the song themselves, we must also request permission from RCA Records.

Filming/Editing Schedule

Costume Research (2nd Post)

Costume Research

1937
Our character for the next section of the music video is based on the Mob Boss/gangster style of the 1930s. He will be wearing a suit and have slicked back hair.

1957
In the 1950s the Greaser style emerged. We will be replicating this style in our music video using Mutt Jones from "Indiana Jones 4" as a reference. He wears a leather jacket with jeans.

There will be another character in this section, who will be threatened by the criminal. He will be wearing casual clothing.

1977
Our character in the 1970s section is based on Mark Renton from "Trainspotting" who adopts the Skinhead look. He wears a T-shirt under a Harrington jacket and grey jeans. He will also be wearing a flat cap as our actor will not be shaving his head.

As the final part of our music video is set in the modern day we will be adopting the modern criminal look. We have based this on Elliot Alderson from the TV show "Mr Robot", who wears a dark hoodie and a backpack.
