Colour Grading/Correction

Now that all the filming and editing has been completed, a few alterations can be made to final production, which includes colour correction.
We discussed as a group the biggest segments that we felt could be improved by altering the colour were the 1890 and 1950 sections. As you can see below;

Filming Day 6 - Green Screen (Ryan's House)

We purchased a green screen on Amazon for about £6. We bought a green screen because we had the idea of including all of the different time periods in a dance section during a section of the song which has no vocals at the end. It was compulsive that this was done on a green screen since each time period had to have the same background. We decided upon a white background since a plain background looked better and white offered a nice contrast to the character's outfits and props.

Filming with the use of a green screen was very easy considering it was the first time any of us had ever used one,  and also  the camera was not to move throughout the process. We did, however, encounter some difficulties. Firstly, the green screen was shipped folded, meaning there were creases that needed to be flattened out in order to get the background looking right.  We fixed the creases and carried on filming.

The Dancing section was very difficult as none of the group particularly like dancing so our choreography was terrible. We shot this scene quite a few times to conclude with a dance sequence we all liked.

Filming Day 5 - 70s Lip Syncing (2nd Attempt)

We attempted to film the 1970s section because the lip syncing looked terrible. The majority of the camera shots have remained the same because they actually worked, but many have been re-filmed. This didn't take long at all as we already had all of the shots we wanted planned before hand, but we still had the issue of people living in the area who wanted to know what we were filming and what it was for. We also took extra care to make sure Ryan's coat was unzipped during filming and some other factors so that we didn't have to redo everything again.

Filming Day 4 (Liverpool - Part 2)

After filming the Victorian part of our music video, Callum, Ryan and Olliewalked towards Albert Dock to prepare for the modern day section, I wasn't in this part of the music video so I wasn't needed. They scouted the area and lined up the shot, then waited until dark so we could film in front of the wheel with the lights in the background. There was apparently no issues during the filming of this section.

Filming Day 4 - Liverpool (Victorian)

We met at Moorfields train station at 9:00am, then made our way to Saltney Street, which is about half a mile down the road from Costco; to film the Victorian time period section of the music video.  We needed a narrative scene before the music begins. When we began filming, we realised we couldn't use the entire wall due to graffiti  that made it clear that it was the modern day. We resolved this issue by using the same part of the wall over and over again and cutting to a different shot whenever we reached the end. This didn't take long as we didn't need to worry about lip syncing. However, the rest of this section took a very long time as we needed to keep stopping due to cars coming up and down the road, and it was difficult to get the lip syncing right because Ryan also needed to focus on spinning the cane. There was also some employees outside of a near by fast food restaurant that was asking questions and distracting us which delayed filming slightly.

Filming Adjustments

Callum decided to make a minor change to the current version of the music video. He changed the date text to cover the whole screen rather than appearing at the bottom, as It was too small and wanted to make sure nobody missed the change in time periods.

Filming Day 3 - Re-shooting (1930s)

Due to the many lighting and lip syncing issues, we decided to completely re-film the 1930s section of our music video.

This wasn't as difficult as before because we were indoors so we didn't have to film in the cold (or deal with other people). We also decided to make some adjustments to Ryan's costume. The most noticeable change is him wearing  glasses. This makes his character resemble Ronnie Kray, a famous English gangster during the 1950s and 60s.

We then made our way to my house to film the 1937 section of our video. We had to clear a space for our setting as well as filming equipment. We cleared the room by pushing all the furniture to the back of the room.

We then encountered another problem, the colouration was wrong and the footage was far too dark. This we solved by closing the curtains and shining a light directly at Ryan.

(Curtains shut)

We managed to fix all of the lighting issues as well as the lip syncing issues and improved the overall look of Ryan's character.

Filming Day 2 - Port Sunlight (1950s)

We met up in Port Sunlight and started filming at around 9:00am. Filming went fairly smoothly. There were no technical issues e.g. lighting, whatsoever, we required few takes, and the lip syncing looked good.

The only issues we encountered were a loud ATM machine, and a scary biker gang which drove us away from our original filming location. However, this gang of bikers may have actually helped us, as the new location we found, just to the left of our original location, about 100ft further down the road, was easier to film in. There was also the minor issue of cars 'getting into' shot so we had to re-film a few scenes in order to make sure every prop met the time period.

Below is the new version of the music video including the 1950s section:

  • Filming Day 1 - Moreton (1970s)

We arrived in Moreton at 8:15 am on 10th December to begin the first day of filming. We walked to the first filming location - Sedgefield Road - to start filming the 1970s section of the video.

We encountered a few issues while filming. Firstly, the amount of people who came out to see what we were doing. A few people asked if we were making a YouTube video, and one man asked if we were filming ourselves "jumping off the walls".

Another major issue that set us back was one of continuity. While discussing shot types, Ryan zipped up the jacket, which is unzipped in previous shots. We didn't not notice this for about an hour, meaning we had to back-track and re-film a number of shots.

When we completed the '70s section, after about 3 hours of filming, we got the train to Oliver's house to film the 1930's section.

While Ryan was styling his hair to suit the 1930s Mob Boss character, the rest of us set up the camera on top of the tripod and dolly.

We had some lighting issues,  Ryan was red on the camera and we realised this was due to the red wallpaper in the room we were filming in. We fixed this issue by closing the curtains to block out the sunlight, and pointing a lamp with a white light at Ryan.
