Technical - how meaning is conveyed using technical equipment, e.g. the way camera angles are used, different types of shots, sound either digetic or non-digetic sound. The pace and style of editing and the genre.

Symbolic - are ways of showing meanings beyond what you can see for example through facial expressions, gestures, poses and mise en scene.

For example, the technical code of lighting is used in some way in all film genres. It is a convention of the horror genre that side and back lighting is used to create mystery and suspense – an integral part of any horror movie.
